Brew Guide for Espresso

Espresso Brewing Guide: Unlock the Perfect Shot

Essential Equipment

  • Espresso Machine (with portafilter)
  • Coffee Grinder
  • Coffee Scale
  • 18-21g of Whole Bean Coffee
  • 36-42g of Water

Average Brew Time: 22-28 seconds

Step 1: Prepping the Portafilter

Begin by rinsing your portafilter and purging the grouphead to ensure a clean and fresh start. Dry the portafilter thoroughly. This step is crucial to prevent old coffee residues from affecting your brew's flavor. Additionally, a dry portafilter is essential to avoid uneven and over-extraction.

Step 2: Measuring and Grinding

Grind and measure your coffee, also known as "dosing." For espresso, opt for a fine grind and use 18-21g of coffee.

The specific amount depends on factors like freshness, grind size, and desired flavor intensity. It's recommended to start with around 18.6g of freshly roasted coffee at a fine grind setting and then refine your dose as you gain experience.

Step 3: Distributing and Tamping

Load the dry portafilter with the freshly ground coffee and distribute it evenly across the basket. Tamp the grounds evenly with a straight wrist.

Even distribution ensures uniform extraction as water flows through the coffee. Avoid over-tamping, as it can impede water flow and lead to over-extraction.

Step 4: Extraction

Attach the portafilter, secure it to the grouphead, and place your collection vessel below. Start the extraction process. After approximately 6 seconds, you'll notice concentrated coffee flowing from the portafilter.

When the coffee starts to lighten in color, stop the extraction; this is known as "blonding." Espresso, when prepared correctly, usually begins blonding at about 22-28 seconds. If it happens earlier or later, it may indicate over- or under-extraction.

Step 5: Taste, Sip, and Adjust

Taste your espresso and savor its complex flavors. Some prefer to stir it for a homogeneous taste, while others sip it without stirring to explore its layered complexity.

Serving it with soda water can help cleanse your palate. Espresso brewing is intricate, with numerous variables to manage. Over time, you'll hone your skills and savor exceptional coffee along the way.

Our Equipment Recommendations
