Brew Guide for French Press

French Press: Master the Art of Immersion

Essential Equipment

Step 1: Calculate Your Coffee-Water Ratio

Begin by determining your coffee-water ratio. For the French Press method, we recommend a starting point of a 1:12 ratio (40g of coffee to 500g of water). 


You can adjust this ratio based on your coffee, vessel, and personal taste preferences.


Step 2: Boil the Water

Start boiling your water in the kettle. This step not only saves time during preparation but also allows the water to cool slightly after boiling, aiming for a temperature range of 195-205°F when you pour it over the coffee.


Step 3: Grind Your Coffee

It's time to grind your coffee beans. For the French Press method, aim for a coarse grind similar to Kosher salt. 


This coarse grind is ideal for an immersion brew method, preventing over-extraction and reducing sediment for a smoother, less bitter brew. Consistency in grind size ensures even flavor extraction.


Step 4: Preheat and Add Grounds

Preheat your French Press by pouring hot water on the outside. Then, add your freshly ground coffee. 


Pre-heating the vessel ensures consistent extraction temperature, and the dry interior prevents grounds from prematurely extracting in residual water, resulting in a smoother brew.


Step 5: Initiate the Bloom

Place your French Press on the scale, tare the weight, start your timer, and pour approximately 80g of water in a spiral motion from the center to the edge of the grounds. Wait for 20-30 seconds, or until the coffee stops bubbling. 


This process, known as "blooming," initiates extraction, releases volatile CO2, and enhances flavor bonding.


Step 6: Steeping and Pouring

Using small circular motions to evenly agitate the coffee grounds, pour in the remaining water until the scale reaches 500g. Stir the mixture 5-8 times and let it steep until your timer reads 4 minutes. 


Be cautious not to over-agitate the coffee, as excessive agitation can lead to over-extraction and unwanted sediment.


Step 7: Filter and Serve

Place the piston-filter on top of your brew vessel and lower it gently until it touches the top of the brewed coffee, but do not press further. With the piston-filter at the top, pour the coffee through the piston-filter into your drinking vessel. 


This method prevents excess agitation and over-extraction, resulting in a cleaner and crisper flavor.
