Brew Guide for V60 Coffee

Brew the Perfect V60 Pour-over Coffee

Essential Equipment

  • Clean V60 Brewing Vessel (with filter)
  • Coffee Grinder
  • Coffee Scale
  • Fresh Whole Bean Coffee
  • Filtered Water
  • Kettle

Average Brew Time: ~3 minutes

Step 1: Measure Your Coffee-Water Ratio

Begin by calculating your ideal coffee-to-water ratio. For the V60 method, we recommend starting with a 1:17 ratio (24g of coffee to 408g of water).

Feel free to adjust this ratio based on your coffee, vessel, and personal taste.

Step 2: Boil Water

Start boiling your water in the kettle. This not only saves time during preparation but also allows the water to cool slightly after boiling, aiming for a range of 195-205°F for the pour.

Step 3: Grind Your Coffee

For the V60 method, aim for a coarse grind similar to sea salt. This consistency promotes a smooth coffee flow and prevents over-extraction, ensuring your brew doesn't turn muddy or bitter.

Step 4: Pre-Wet the Filter

Place your filter in the V60 and wet it by pouring a circle of water around the side. Then, discard the water and reposition the catch vessel under your V60. Pre-wetting the filter helps remove any unwanted flavors and prevents dilution with papery tastes.

Step 5: Start the Bloom

Add your freshly ground coffee to the pre-wetted filter, start your timer, and pour about 50g of water in a spiral pattern to thoroughly wet all the coffee grounds. Allow the coffee to "bloom" for 20-30 seconds. This step releases volatile gases, primarily CO2, and ensures even extraction when the remaining water is added.

Step 6: Pace Your Pour

Once the gas release subsides, pour the rest of your water in small, quarter-sized circles, focusing mainly on the center of the filter. Maintain a consistent pace to keep the water level constant until it's all poured.

The goal is to have all the water pass through the grounds in approximately 3 minutes. This final pour impacts extraction speed and coffee agitation, ensuring a smooth and balanced taste in the end product.

Our Equipment Recommendations

If you're looking to upgrade your coffee equipment, consider our suggestions:

V60 Vessel: We recommend the Hario V60 Coffee Dripper, crafted from durable ceramic with spiral ridges for even water distribution.

Coffee Grinder: The Baratza Encore offers quality at an affordable price, delivering consistent grinds.

Coffee Scale: For precision, consider the Brewista Ratio Scale, providing precise measurements and pouring speed guidance, optimizing your V60 brew for the perfect cup.
