Brew Guide for Batch Brew Coffee

Batch Brew Guide: Unlock Flavor with Precision

Essential Equipment

  • Batch Brewer (including filter)
  • Coffee Grinder
  • Coffee Scale
  • 60g of Whole Bean Coffee
  • 1 liter (4 1/5 Cups) of Filtered Water

Average Brew Time: ~4 minutes

Step 1: Pristine Equipment Preparation

Ensure that your carafe and grounds basket are spotless. Thorough cleaning is essential to prevent lingering flavors from previous batches.

You can use basic soap and water (rinse thoroughly) or specialized products like Carfiza for optimal cleaning.

Step 2: Calculate Your Coffee-Water Ratio

Determine your coffee-water ratio for the batch brew. We suggest using 60g of coffee per liter of water, which translates to 14g of coffee per cup of water.

Adjust this ratio as needed (e.g., 30g for ½ liter, 90g for 1 ½ liters, and so on).

Step 3: Precise Coffee Grinding

Grind your coffee to a coarseness similar to table salt. Consistency in grind size is vital for even flavor extraction from your beans.

Step 4: Loading and Bed Depth

Load your water hopper according to the ratio determined in Step 2. Place a filter in the basket and pour your freshly ground coffee into it.

Aim for an even distribution of coffee in the filter, ideally resulting in a 3-5 cm (~1 in) bed depth, measured from the bottom of the filter.

Step 5: Brewing Excellence

Commence your brew, ideally adjusting the temperature to fall within the 195-205°F range, if your batch brewer offers this feature.

Our Equipment Recommendations

While your existing equipment may suffice, consider our suggested upgrades:

Batch Brewer: Opt for a model with precise temperature control and a thermal carafe, such as the Bonita One-Touch Thermal Brewer. This model includes a pre-wet ("bloom") feature, allowing the coffee to degas before brewing.

Coffee Grinder: The Baratza Encore stands out as the most affordable quality grinder on the market, delivering consistent and uniform grinds.

Coffee Scale: For precise measurements, the Brewista Ratio Scale is an excellent choice. It offers pouring speed guidance when using pour-over brew methods, optimizing extraction time for a perfect cup.
