Brew Guide for Cold Brew Coffee

Making Delicious Cold Brew at Home

Essential Equipment

  • Clean 64oz Mason Jar
  • Coffee Grinder
  • Coffee Scale
  • Whole Bean Coffee
  • Filtered Water (38°-42° F)
  • Coffee Filtering Device OR Cheesecloth

Average Brew Time: 18-24 hours

Step 1: Perfect Coffee-Water Ratio

For your Cold Brew adventure, we suggest a 1:4 ratio of coffee to water.

This concentration can be later diluted to your taste, ensuring you get the most out of each batch. Start with 250g of coffee to 1000ml of water.

Step 2: Chilled Water Preparation

To achieve optimal results, refrigerate your water for approximately 3 hours.

A pro tip: pour the water over ice to speed up the process. Allow the water to settle and stabilize in temperature, ensuring consistent conditions for even extraction.

Step 3: Coffee Grinding

For Cold Brew, opt for a coarse grind akin to Kosher salt. The larger grind size minimizes coffee-water contact, facilitating slow and even extraction, preserving the coffee's smooth character. Ensure grind consistency for a harmonious flavor extraction.

Step 4: Initiate Extraction

Add your freshly ground coffee to the 64oz mason jar and pour around 200ml of chilled water, ensuring all grounds are wet. Wait 30-40 seconds, or until the coffee stops bubbling.

This initial phase, called blooming, allows the coffee to release volatile gases, setting the stage for even extraction.

Step 5: The Long Brew

Pour the remaining chilled water and lightly stir to ensure all grounds are wet and evenly distributed. Seal the mason jar and store it in the refrigerator for the next 18-24 hours.

Because the optimal extraction time varies with grind and coffee type, we recommend tasting at the 18-hour mark. You can decide to filter it or leave it longer based on your preferences.

Step 6: Filtering Delightful Cold Brew

We recommend using a French press or cheesecloth to filter your brew, though other filter devices can work too. Pour your cold brew concentrate through the filter into a clean glass vessel, such as a pitcher or another mason jar. Once filtered, you can dilute your cold brew with water, ice, or milk to enjoy a smooth, highly caffeinated drink worth savoring.

Cheers to Great Cold Brew!

Our Recommendations

While your current equipment may suffice, consider our suggested upgrades:

Cold Brew Equipment

We recommend the Toddy Cold Brew System for its simplicity, convenience, and affordability. While the mason jar method works, it can occasionally yield murky brew if not filtered properly.

Toddy provides a robust and pure cold brew concentrate. Its slow filtering process keeps the grounds intact, ensuring a clean and crisp brew. Enjoy the smoothest and least acidic cold brew in your cup.

Coffee Grinder

The Baratza Encore is a top-value grinder, offering affordability without compromising quality. Consistency is crucial, especially for Cold Brew. Uneven grounds can disrupt your brew over several hours, potentially leading to over-extraction and unwanted bitterness.

Coffee Scale

Achieve precision with a Brewista Ratio Scale. This coffee scale not only provides precise measurements but also aids in controlling pouring speed, optimizing extraction time for that perfect cup.
